People I Met In The Car

This post is also available in: polski (Polish)

Many years ago, when I was a student I used hitch-hiking, especially on holiday. The idea came from the localization of my university which was situated very close to the road to the seaside city Gdańsk in Poland. Every day we could see the signpost from the city bus window. And one day I and two of my friends just decided to hitch-hike up to the sea. That is how the adventure began.

Today, I don’t hitch-hike anymore, however, I have many situations that somebody stops even in the city, and wants to do me a favor. They are people, who I don’t know, but they so often make my day, because they truly want to share the light with others. So, I would like to dedicate this post to Ian, Olive, a woman from Zlotniki, and many others who I met on the way.

# 1 Scotland, Ullapool, Highland, Christmas time

No buses, no cars, no people on the road, just me and my husband tried to get to Glasgow, after the winter holiday in the beautiful mountains at the end of Europe. After a long time of waiting, one car stopped and the elderly man took us, first for a tea to his house, and later to the bigger crossword. He gave us also his phone number and told us if we didn’t catch any car, he can come back and take us to our destination. Finally, we caught some hitch-hiking, but we rang Ian next year Christmas, and he had remembered us. Oh yes, we will think back to him for the rest of our life.

Thank you, Ian!

#2 Poland, Wroclaw, Zlotniki, spring

I was waiting for a bus to the city center when suddenly a blue Nissan stopped and an elderly lady through the window asked me: Do you need a lift? I was shocked but finally didn’t take her proposal because my bus was going soon, and it was direct. However, she made my day and refreshed the fact that people can be so great.

Thank you lady from Zlotniki!

#3 Ireland, Galway, campus, heavy rainy day

A time ago I was walking to the center, but in the one minute when I left my house, the heavy rain started, so even I had an umbrella, I run to hide in some university building because it was not possible to go anywhere in litters of water pouring from the sky. I was waiting in the psychology department for around ten minutes but it did not seem that the rain would stop. Then one lady, which was passing me in the corridor, said that she can take me by car to the city center. I agreed timidly, and we had a chance to share the light together during this short travel. It was just a reminder from the day, that people are extraordinary, and simple magic can happen everywhere.

Thank you, Olive!

I know these are very simple things, I described, but for me, this is an essential message about people that we do great things, pay attention to others, can help each other. Simply, we can do it! So, please, do not forget, let’s continue it.

Did you hitchhike at any time?
