The first day of Christmas is gray. I pour coffee into an orange, travel cup and tea into a thermos, wrap four pieces of poppy seed cake. We go to Connemara. Can’t imagine to visit her on Christmas, actually I can’t already imagine to live without her.
Beige hills, raw rocks, wet khaki colorued grasses and white-blue sheep awake me to the authenticity.
At the Maam Cross, the old man with thick beard keeps plastic bag in the hand and looks at us. Then I have preposterous thought in my head, that maybe he is Celtic Santa Claus.
The weather looks like graphite-black rocks around, landscape without any filters. We pass the damp walls of houses, empty fields, sheep always present.
All distance emptied, the world reduced
to an arm’s length. (…)
– wrote poet Seán Hewitt about Connemara.
The wilderness stretches also in my heart and there is the ocean on the ends, always.
I get out on the road, the wind bends me but I smile more and more because Connemara brings me back to honest life.
It’s good to see you, Margaret. It’s soothing landscape 🙂 We greet from Wrocław.
Thank you, Justa! I am sure you would love Connemara, too. 🙂
